Kayson Green Talks: Aluminium Grinding
Aluminium’s high strength compared to its lightweight, softness, and superior corrosion resistance make it a popular material for metal fabrication. However, working with aluminium offers several challenges due to its low melting point. Heat and friction caused by aluminium grinding can melt and stick to the abrasive and prevent it from working properly.
When working with aluminium, issues can occur. Porosity contamination from the abrasive weakens the structural integrity of the aluminium weld and oxide inclusions. This can compromise the strength and fatigue resistance from the weld where the aluminium oxide layer is not fully removed. So, what is the best way to achieve effective aluminium grinding without undermining the weld?
Tools for Grinding Aluminium
Although lubricants such as grease can improve the grinding process, they have downsides in terms of cost, quality, and safety. The best way to ensure your aluminium weld turns out perfectly is by choosing the right grinding wheels.
The best types of wheels to use for grinding aluminium feature grain blends that offer consistency and a contaminant-free bond. Resin fibre-bonded grinding discs with a flat and firm rubber backing pad are the best options for working with aluminium. The discs should have a lubricant coating as well to counteract any build-up of heat. This helps prevent the aluminium from melting and ensures the abrasive product lasts longer.
Another option for aluminium grinding is with top-coated flap discs in medium to coarse grit sizes. These discs can grind aluminium in less time than resin discs but are much more pliable and need an excellent skill set to get the best result.
