Kayson Green Talks Rotary Burrs For Metal Fabrication
One of the most important tools used in metal fabrication is the rotary burr. Rotary burrs for metal fabrication are rotating tools used for the removal of material from workpieces. They spin at very high speeds to deburr, cut, shape, grind and enlarge holes on metal workpieces. Rotary burrs are good for use on metals such as steel, aluminium, and iron, as well as wood, acrylics, fibreglass, and plastics.
Rotary burrs for metal fabrication are commonly used for making tools/dies, rectification of castings, sculpting and in general engineering. Let’s look a bit deeper at what rotary burrs for metal fabrication are used for.
What is Deburring?
Deburring is the process of removing small imperfections from metal workpieces. Various machine processes can cause these imperfections such as moulding, casting, stamping and laser cutting. While there are different methods for removing imperfections from metal, one of the most effective is with rotary burrs.
Deburring is necessary to ensure the functionality, durability, and reliability of a finished piece.
Types of Rotary Burrs
Rotary burrs are made from one of two materials: tungsten carbide or high-strength steel (HSS). When it comes to working with metals, tungsten carbide burrs are the better choice due to their extreme hardness and durability. Tungsten carbide burrs also have a higher heat tolerance than HSS. In addition, metal rotary burrs can come in two types of cut aluminium (single cut) and diamond (double cut).
Single-cut burrs remove material faster without clogging. However, double-cut burrs offer a smoother finish than single-cut ones.
Shapes & Sizes
The shape and size of the rotary burr will determine the shape of the profile you are trying to create:
- Ball-shaped burrs create a concave cut in your material and can be used to shape and hollow out a small area.
- Tree burrs have a pointed nose and are good for making concave cuts and rounding off edges, as well as cutting in hard-to-reach areas.
- Inverted cone burrs can make v cuts in your profile and can be used for rear side chamfering.
- Pointed cone and round nose burrs are used for rounded edges and surface finishing in hard-to-reach spots and tight areas.
- Cylinder burrs come in round nose, ball nose and end cut varieties and are used for contour finishing.
- Oval burrs, flame burrs, and oblate spheroid are great for shaping and channel work.
- Countersink burrs are angled at 60 or 90 degrees and are used for bevelling, chamfering, counter boring and getting into angled areas.
